Hear from leading Greater Manchester employers on how T Level placements are boosting their business and helping them shape their future workforce.

Dawn Moore, HR Director, Murphy, and member of Employer Integration Board

As an international construction and civil engineering company with a strong base in Greater Manchester, the focus on job-ready skills supported by a qualification is ideal for companies in practical sectors like construction.

Murphy takes a practical approach to hosting T Levels, with a mixture of office and site-based placements. We also assign a mentor from day one, providing clear objectives and support to our students.

As a result, 70% of T Level students have stayed with us long-term, moving into apprenticeships and other career pathways.  This says a lot about the quality of the young people who come to us.

T Level placements are a win-win for businesses needing practical skills and offer a long-term talent pipeline, and I would encourage other employers to pledge a placement.

Sarah Brookes Pearce, Head of Early Careers, Auto Trader

Auto Trader is a large tech employer based in Manchester. We invest heavily in early careers, and T Level placements are a key part of our early careers strategy.

Our placement structure uses a mix of blocks and regular days to ensure our students gain the experience they need while fitting into the company’s hybrid working model.

So why host a placement? T Level students are passionate, engaged, collaborative, and curious. They are ready for the workplace and offer employers an early talent pipeline. As a result of our success with T Level placements, other areas of the business are interested in hosting students keen to benefit from their strong communication and collaboration skills.

Clive Memmott, Chief Executive, Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce, and Co-Chair of the Employer Integration Board

The Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce works closely with businesses across the city-region. The Chamber has recently welcomed T Level students and supports a variety of placements across different sectors.

Early talent spotting and the capability and motivation of young people at 16-18 years old, has been a key driver in hosting T Level placements, and we are strong advocates for putting trust in young talent.

I’ve seen first hand the benefits of hosting T Level placements, with young people being successfully integrated into complex environments, for example at Nexperia, which is a Hazel Grove-based semiconductor business. By hosting T Level placements, employers can take advantage of early talent engagement and development.

Meet some of Greater Manchester's T Level students - past and present:

Ethan secured a placement with PP O’Connor as part of his  T Level in Design, Planning and Surveying (Civil Engineering). This gave him exposure to various sites and work experience across Greater Manchester, enabling him to build up a strong CV. He has since secured a quantity surveying degree apprenticeship opportunity, starting in July.

Veronica did her T Level placement with GMCA, giving her hands-on learning and networking opportunities, as well as developing her confidence and public speaking skills. The skills and experience gained on the T Level course helped her secure a degree apprenticeship at the Bank of New York.

Jennifer has been on placement with Dodd Group since last April, as part of her Design, Planning and Surveying (Civil Engineering) T Level. The placement has been pivotal in developing her technical skills and industry connections, leading to the offer of a long-term position and apprenticeship with the company once she’s finished her T Level course.

Since starting his placement with the GM Chamber in January as part of his Business Management T Level, Logan is building experience in networking events and systems learning. Working in an office environment is helping to improve his skills and confidence and he hopes to secure a job or degree apprenticeship once he finishes his T Level course.
